New Breakthroughs in UV-C Sanitizing

The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically altered many facets of our day-to-day lives, including the ways we think about cleaning and sanitation. Even now, as the pandemic winds down and normal life resumes in earnest, it’s clear that some of the more sensible habits we all developed (or redeveloped) are going to stick around. People are washing their hands more frequently and remembering to clean and sanitize food preparation surfaces more thoroughly. We’re also embracing technological innovations that will make the future healthier, including UV-C sanitizing devices that kill microorganisms in places where traditional solutions are undesirable or altogether unusable.

UV-C light is a subtype of ultraviolet radiation that occurs naturally. Our Sun emits a hefty amount of it, for example, but most of that gets absorbed by Earth’s atmosphere—which is good, because UV-C is a powerful and indiscriminate killer of bacteria and viruses. The frequency of the wavelength is just right to scramble microorganisms from the inside out. And, conveniently, we can harness that power in several different ways to aid in sanitizing everything from very small, fiddly items to large spaces.

There are products like the Artemis® UV Sterilizer Cabinet, a tabletop device that uses UV-C to kill germs on small-to-medium sized items. Anything from simple tools to complex machines and electronics can be placed inside these kinds of sterilizers and be germ-free in as little as 15 minutes. Machines of this variety are very useful for sterilizing personal items like phones, watches, in-ear headphones, keys/key fobs, and so on. They’re also useful for sterilizing tools made from certain types of carbon steel or iron that are especially susceptible to rust when treated with water-based sanitizers.

There are also larger devices like the Artemis® UV Lamp that are intended to blanket entire rooms (or portions thereof) with UV-C, sterilizing everything including the air through which the light travels. Machines of this variety are incredibly useful in educational, healthcare, hospitality, and even residential environments because of their ease of use and thorough germ-killing abilities.
